Position Summary
The Free Media Advisor will oversee and manage all technical media aspects of an anticipated USAID Free and Open Media project, ensuring that objectives are met on time and within budget.
This position is conditional upon funding
The Free Media Advisor will locate and operate from Goma with travel support to locations in Kalemie, Kinshasa, Bukavu Lubumbashi, Gbadolite, and Bunia.
The Media Advisor works closely with all members of the DRC Senior Management Team, as well as with Search Regional and Global teams, Government, donors, media partners, media actors and civil society organizations.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Oversee and ensure completion of all media activities under the overall project
- Provide strategic and technical leadership for all media activities
- Ensure that media productions are conflict-sensitive and are relevant to the messages of the project and of Search for Common Ground
- Serve as the principal media liaison for this project on behalf of Search for Common Ground with all media partners
- Develop and maintain effective partnerships with local, provincial, and national media institutions and organizations on behalf of Search for Common Ground
- Oversee and monitor the quality of media programs
- Ensure project activities are implemented on schedule and within budget
- Supervise, manage, and mentor media staff
Qualifications
Experience
- Progressive experience working in the media sector especially in the DRC
- Experience working as a journalist or in media
- Successful track record of supervising, designing, managing, and implementing media related projects
- Experience with USAID- and/or US government-funded programs an asset
Skills and Competencies
- Demonstrated ability to establish strong working relationships with media professionals
- Understanding of the political, economic, and media landscape in the Democratic Republic of Congo
- Proven leadership qualities, excellent management skills, strong communication skills
- Working knowledge of English
- Native fluency in French and any other local languages
- Staff management experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Good guidance, counseling and negotiation skills, at all levels;
- Good teamwork skills;
- Adherence to Search for Common Ground values.
