Democratic Republic of the Congo: Gender Specialist

​Chemonics seeks a short-term gender specialist for the ongoing USAID- and U.K. Department for International Development (DFID)-funded Improving Reading, Equity, and Accountability in the Democratic Republic of Congo (I-READ) project. The I-READ project is a five-year, $134 million early grade reading project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The project will work in at least 25 education sub-provinces across four target provinces to improve access to education and learning outcomes for girls and boys in the DRC. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. Responsibilities include:

  • Create a gender analysis and gender implementation strategy for the project's first year (to be updated periodically in future project years)
  • Conduct a gender analysis that will be used to develop the strategy to ensure that girls and boys benefit equally from project activities
  • Identify triggers and mitigating factors that project staff will undertake to address gaps, monitor project implementation, and ensure that activities are addressing girls' and boys' needs in relation to equitable access and learning in safe environments
  • Travel to Lubumbashi, DRC, in mid- to late July for approximately four weeks

Qualifications:

  • Ability to conduct gender analyses for international donors; proven ability to apply results of gender analysis to programs
  • Experience working in the education sector and applying gender analysis to education programs preferred
  • Experience conducting focus groups and key informant interviews
  • Experience in social and behavior change communications; behavior change communication; and information, education, and communication preferred
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication skills and ability to get along with others
  • Knowledge of USAID gender regulations
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • ​Good written and oral communication skills in French and English
